CBD Dosage Guide: How Much Should You Take?

CBD Dosage Guide: How Much Should You Take? - CBD education article by CJ's Medicine Cabinet

One of the most common questions from CBD newcomers is "How much should I take?" The answer is not one-size-fits-all, but this guide will help you find your optimal dose using a systematic approach.

Why There Is No Universal Dose

Unlike pharmaceutical drugs with standardized dosing based on clinical trials, CBD dosing varies significantly from person to person. Several factors influence your ideal dose:

  • Body weight: Larger individuals generally need higher doses
  • Body chemistry: Everyone's endocannabinoid system is unique
  • Severity of condition: More severe symptoms may require higher doses
  • Product type: Bioavailability varies by delivery method
  • Tolerance: Regular users may need to adjust doses over time
  • Other medications: Some medications affect how your body metabolizes CBD

The Low-and-Slow Method

The gold standard approach is to start low and increase slowly. Here is a step-by-step protocol:

Week 1: Start Low

Begin with 10 to 15mg of CBD per day. Take it at the same time each day, ideally with a fatty meal (CBD is fat-soluble, and food increases absorption by up to 5x).

Week 2: Assess and Adjust

If you are not noticing desired effects, increase by 5mg. Continue taking notes on how you feel, sleep quality, and any changes.

Weeks 3 to 4: Find Your Sweet Spot

Continue increasing by 5mg every 5 to 7 days until you find the dose that provides relief. Most people find their optimal dose between 20 and 60mg per day.

Maintenance

Once you find your effective dose, stay there. More is not always better with CBD. Some research suggests a bell-shaped dose-response curve, meaning very high doses may be less effective than moderate doses.

Dosing by Body Weight

A general starting guideline based on body weight:

  • Under 130 lbs: 10 to 15mg per day
  • 130 to 200 lbs: 15 to 25mg per day
  • Over 200 lbs: 25 to 40mg per day

These are starting points only. Your optimal dose may be higher or lower.

Bioavailability by Product Type

Not all CBD reaches your bloodstream equally. Bioavailability measures how much CBD actually gets absorbed:

Sublingual (Tinctures/Oils): 12 to 35%

Hold under your tongue for 60 to 90 seconds before swallowing. The mucous membranes under the tongue allow CBD to enter the bloodstream directly, bypassing first-pass liver metabolism.

Oral (Gummies, Softgels, Edibles): 6 to 19%

Must pass through the digestive system and liver before reaching the bloodstream. Takes 30 to 90 minutes to feel effects, but effects last longer (4 to 6 hours).

Topical (Creams, Balms): Localized

CBD in topicals does not enter the bloodstream in significant amounts. Instead, it interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the skin, muscles, and joints directly below the application site. Apply generously to the target area.

Inhalation (Vaping): 34 to 56%

Highest bioavailability but shortest duration. Effects felt within minutes. Not recommended due to potential lung health concerns.

When to Take CBD

  • For sleep: 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime
  • For general wellness: Morning or evening, consistently
  • For anxiety: 30 to 60 minutes before anticipated stressful situations, or twice daily for ongoing management
  • For pain: Twice daily (morning and evening) for best coverage, with topicals applied as needed
  • For exercise recovery: Within 1 hour post-workout

Common Dosing Mistakes

  • Giving up too soon: CBD often takes 2 to 4 weeks of consistent use to reach full effectiveness. It builds up in your system over time.
  • Taking too much too fast: High doses too early can cause drowsiness or digestive discomfort. Start low.
  • Inconsistent timing: Take CBD at the same time each day for best results.
  • Empty stomach: Always take oral CBD with food for better absorption.
  • Ignoring product quality: A poorly made product may have less CBD than claimed, making dosing unpredictable.

When to Consult a Healthcare Provider

Talk to your doctor before using CBD if you:

  • Take prescription medications (especially blood thinners, seizure medications, or immunosuppressants)
  • Are pregnant or nursing
  • Have liver disease
  • Are scheduled for surgery

CBD inhibits certain liver enzymes (CYP3A4 and CYP2C19) that metabolize many common medications. This can cause drug levels to increase or decrease unpredictably. Read our full guide on CBD and drug interactions for details.
