Can CBD Help with Anxiety? What the Research Says

Can CBD Help with Anxiety? What the Research Says - CBD education article by CJ's Medicine Cabinet

Anxiety disorders affect over 40 million adults in the United States, making them the most common mental health condition in the country. While prescription medications like SSRIs and benzodiazepines are effective for many people, they come with side effects that lead some to look for natural alternatives. CBD is one of the most researched options.

How CBD Affects Anxiety

The Serotonin Connection

CBD interacts with 5-HT1A serotonin receptors in the brain. These are the same receptors targeted by buspirone, a common anti-anxiety medication. A 2015 review published in Neurotherapeutics concluded that CBD has "considerable potential" as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders based on preclinical and human evidence.

The Endocannabinoid System

Your body produces its own cannabinoids called endocannabinoids. Anandamide, often called the "bliss molecule," plays a role in mood regulation. CBD inhibits the enzyme (FAAH) that breaks down anandamide, allowing more of it to circulate in your system. Higher anandamide levels are associated with reduced anxiety.

GABA Modulation

CBD may also enhance the activity of GABA, the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. GABA calms neural activity. This is the same system that benzodiazepines target, though CBD works through a different and much gentler mechanism.

What the Studies Show

Generalized Anxiety

A 2019 study in The Permanente Journal gave 72 adults with anxiety and poor sleep 25mg of CBD daily. Within the first month, anxiety scores decreased in 79.2% of patients and remained decreased throughout the study.

Social Anxiety

A 2011 study in Neuropsychopharmacology found that a single 600mg dose of CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort in speech performance in people with social anxiety disorder compared to placebo.

PTSD

A 2019 retrospective case series found that CBD reduced PTSD symptoms in 91% of patients (11 out of 12) over an eight-week period. Nightmares also decreased.

Public Speaking

Multiple studies have used simulated public speaking tests to measure CBD's anxiolytic effects. Results consistently show that CBD reduces subjective anxiety during stressful social situations.

How to Use CBD for Anxiety

Choosing a Product

Full spectrum CBD products may be more effective for anxiety because the additional cannabinoids and terpenes (especially linalool and limonene) have their own calming properties that work together through the entourage effect.

Dosing

There is no universal dose for anxiety. Research studies have used doses ranging from 25mg to 600mg. A practical approach:

  • Start low: 15 to 25mg per day
  • Increase gradually: Add 5 to 10mg every week until you find relief
  • Split doses if needed: Some people prefer 10 to 15mg in the morning and again in the evening
  • Be consistent: CBD builds up in your system over time. Give it at least two to four weeks

Timing

For general anxiety, a daily dose taken in the morning or split between morning and evening works well. For situational anxiety (like a presentation or flight), take CBD 30 to 60 minutes beforehand.

What to Expect

CBD is not a sedative at normal doses and should not impair your ability to function. Most people describe the effect as a subtle reduction in the "volume" of anxious thoughts rather than a dramatic shift.

Important Considerations

  • CBD is not a replacement for therapy or prescribed medication. If you are currently on anxiety medication, talk to your doctor before adding CBD
  • CBD can interact with certain medications through the cytochrome P450 system (see our article on CBD and drug interactions)
  • Quality matters. Look for third-party tested products with Certificates of Analysis
